This is Playing the Legends

Hello there. My name is Abnel and I’ve been playing card games for over a decade and a half. Most of that time was spent on Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, Duel Masters (yes, the one that barely got played and you may or may not have heard of) and, most recently, KeyForge. However, as much as I like the competitive scene and besting my opponents, I’ve grown tired of metas. Seeing everyone playing the same things and having very specific combinations of cards be the ones at the top all the time. Not to mention the monetary cost of being competitive in a TCG or LCG.

KeyForge was my last foray (for now) into that world because you buy full decks and can’t deckbuild. Then two things happened:

  1. The promise that “all decks are competitive” turned out to be untrue very fast. Not all decks are created equal. Some decks are beasts that will throw out combos and earn wins like a hot knife through butter. Others are little more than a waste of cardboard and a fire hazard.
  2. Because of the previous point, decks that seemed good would be sold in secondary markets for much higher prices than the sealed price of the deck. And decks that proved themselves to be good, well, the price of those skyrocketed to ridiculous heights.

And so I left that very quickly. Disillusioned, but glad I hadn’t dug in too deep (I only had around 10 decks).

Still, my love for card games hasn’t faded and I’ve been searching for something else to play. I wish I could dive into something competitive, but none of them seem to grab me. Plus, my partner isn’t the best competitive player around, will question every single move made and isn’t the most graceful loser in the land. And so, I’ve turned to cooperative LCGs, ECGs or whatever you want to call them.

Currently I play Legendary Marvel and tomorrow I’ll be going to my FLGS to buy Marvel Champions. I also have an interest in Arkham Horror.

In this blog I’ll be making posts about both Marvel card games. Well, I’ll definitely be making posts about Legendary. Champions, I really hope I’ll like it (fingers crossed). If not, then there will be no posts about it and I’ll be out some cash.

My hope is to share my love for these games with others. Also be able to help anyone who reads have a better, funner and/or more interesting time. As I come across these ideas in my time playing I’ll make posts about difficulty tiers, how to pre-organize a deck for shuffling, deckbuilding and more. So I hope that, if you’re here, it’s because you play and love one of the games I’m talking about, or will talk about in the future, and found something useful, helpful or entertaining to read about.

PS: I also play Star Wars: X-Wing, so I may talk about that one as well. Though, as much as I enjoy that game, I suck at it. So maybe, maybe not, haha.
