Marvel Champions deckbuilding scares me

By the title of this post I mean that I’m afraid for the future of the game. As expansions come out and we get more cards in each aspect we’ll be able to cater a character more to our style. The rules, as they stand, only force you to use the 15 cards assigned to your hero of choice and you can have only three copies of any other given card with the exception of uniques and cards that specify that you can’t on the card itself and you can only use Basic and one other aspect. Other than that, you can do whatever you want with your deck.Continue reading “Marvel Champions deckbuilding scares me”

Becoming OP in Legendary Marvel – Red Skull Tier 1

In accordance to my strategy on how to become OP at Legendary Marvel and how to, pretty much, see every permutation the game has to offer (in its core set) I have gone through all the schemes with Red Skull. Specifically Red Skull, with Hydra (as it leads with them), Spider-Foes as the second villain ground and the Savage Land Mutants as the henchmen, as this is the easiest set up I can think of. I’ll go Scheme by Scheme seeing as it’s the only thing that change from game to game, with the exception of my heroes for the round, but I’ll talk about those in other posts.Continue reading “Becoming OP in Legendary Marvel – Red Skull Tier 1”

Becoming OP in Marvel Champions

I’ve seen posts all over the place of how people that already beat every single villain in Marvel Champions. About how they’ve fared. About the different difficulties. I’ve even seen posts of people saying that the game is way too easy. That last one took me for a loop because I sure haven’t been having an easy time with it. All of this just to say that I am going to take it slow.Continue reading “Becoming OP in Marvel Champions”

Becoming OP in Legendary Marvel

Legendary Marvel has been around for quite a while and I have a lot of catching up to do. That having been said, I’m still gonna take it slow, at my own pace. Going up in difficulty bit by bit, rung by rung. All the while exploring every permutation I can think of for both villains and heroes.Continue reading “Becoming OP in Legendary Marvel”

Played all of the Marvel Champions start decks. Here’s what I think.

By this point I’m ever so very slightly bored with Champions mainly because of the fact that I’m tired of seeing Rhino on the table. But I had a mission and I accomplished it. Try out and understand all of the starter decks included in the core set before I got down to deckbuilding. Now that I’ve done it, I can move on to the next part of my master plan, but first, here’s my thought of the start decks.Continue reading “Played all of the Marvel Champions start decks. Legendary Marvel difficulty tiers – Core Set

This is a list of how I believe the order of the difficulty for each enemy aspect of the Legendary Marvel Core Set play out. The higher the number/lower they are on the list, the more difficult they are.Continue reading “Legendary Marvel difficulty tiers – Core Set”

First game(s) of Marvel Champions, done

I finally got to complete a game of Marvel Champions, at least with the instructions for beginners, and I like the game.

For someone that’s used to Legendary the game’s odd, but still good. So much more fast paced than Legendary is and it feels far more dangerous. Even when things are going downhill in Legendary you still feel like you may regain control of it because of how slow everything is going. It’s like watching a cat slowly push a glass figurine off a table. You could get to it in time if you just hurry up a bit. Not Champions. Things went downhill fast during my first game. There I was with Captain Marvel thinking I had it covered. Next thing I knew, I had half my health, no allies, engaged with one minions, Rhyno was at full health with the scheme at danger points level and two side schemes active. Needless to say, I lost that one.

Second game I decided to take things a bit slower. Built up Captain Marvel a bit before taking down Rhyno’s first stage. Things ramped up fast after that, but I still managed to keep everything under control, for the most part. Even managed to land some real heavy hits in order to beat him. His second form went down in two turns. But I know I was getting plenty lucky because the villain was losing plenty of good cards as his boosts. Leaving somewhat weaker cards as the ones who’s effects actually resolved. Lucky me.

Definitely looking forward to playing some more with the starter decks and the beginner scenario so I can learn how to teach the game to others and move on to advanced modes later. In-game deck building on Legendary is fun and dynamic. But I’m excited about pre-building my deck for Champions.

Back when I played Yu-Gi-Oh I had more fun thinking up decks and figuring out how to make weird things work than actually playing the game itself. And since this can be played solo, I can move from the lab to the table with so much more ease than before. And since this game is cooperative, I don’t care if someone sees my deck and copies it. They’ll be more than welcomed to it! Let’s make this one big, happy family!

I’ll be posting my decks on here if I think they’re worth sharing so that others can beat villains with them. And who knows, someone will probably be able to improve on them further. I’m a weird deck builder, but I’m not the most efficient one, hehe.

FFG, what’s up with your rulebooks?

Okay, I don’t know if I’m dumb or if Fantasy Flight Games’ rulebooks are just weird and obtuse. This is the second time I’ve had issues first getting into a game from them and the rulebook, although helpful, makes the experience so very frustrating that I almost rage quit. The rules are all there, the steps are included. But the order seems to be all over the place. Things that, to me, look like they should logically be explained one after the other, are not. Concepts that should be a subcategory within a segment of the rulebook and on the opposite end. And when it comes to phrasing, often enough, nothing is explained in enough detail as to leave one without any doubts. And the complexity lever of FFG games (more for people unfamiliar with board games or those not well versed) makes it all worse.Continue reading “FFG, what’s up with your rulebooks?”

This is Playing the Legends

Hello there. My name is Abnel and I’ve been playing card games for over a decade and a half. Most of that time was spent on Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, Duel Masters (yes, the one that barely got played and you may or may not have heard of) and, most recently, KeyForge. However, as much as I like the competitive scene and besting my opponents, I’ve grown tired of metas. Seeing everyone playing the same things and having very specific combinations of cards be the ones at the top all the time. Not to mention the monetary cost of being competitive in a TCG or LCG.

KeyForge was my last foray (for now) into that world because you buy full decks and can’t deckbuild. Then two things happened:

  1. The promise that “all decks are competitive” turned out to be untrue very fast. Not all decks are created equal. Some decks are beasts that will throw out combos and earn wins like a hot knife through butter. Others are little more than a waste of cardboard and a fire hazard.
  2. Because of the previous point, decks that seemed good would be sold in secondary markets for much higher prices than the sealed price of the deck. And decks that proved themselves to be good, well, the price of those skyrocketed to ridiculous heights.

And so I left that very quickly. Disillusioned, but glad I hadn’t dug in too deep (I only had around 10 decks).

Still, my love for card games hasn’t faded and I’ve been searching for something else to play. I wish I could dive into something competitive, but none of them seem to grab me. Plus, my partner isn’t the best competitive player around, will question every single move made and isn’t the most graceful loser in the land. And so, I’ve turned to cooperative LCGs, ECGs or whatever you want to call them.

Currently I play Legendary Marvel and tomorrow I’ll be going to my FLGS to buy Marvel Champions. I also have an interest in Arkham Horror.

In this blog I’ll be making posts about both Marvel card games. Well, I’ll definitely be making posts about Legendary. Champions, I really hope I’ll like it (fingers crossed). If not, then there will be no posts about it and I’ll be out some cash.

My hope is to share my love for these games with others. Also be able to help anyone who reads have a better, funner and/or more interesting time. As I come across these ideas in my time playing I’ll make posts about difficulty tiers, how to pre-organize a deck for shuffling, deckbuilding and more. So I hope that, if you’re here, it’s because you play and love one of the games I’m talking about, or will talk about in the future, and found something useful, helpful or entertaining to read about.

PS: I also play Star Wars: X-Wing, so I may talk about that one as well. Though, as much as I enjoy that game, I suck at it. So maybe, maybe not, haha.
